AI standardized patients are virtual patients that learners can talk to in real time. Instead of reading a case or watching a video, the learner asks questions, follows up on answers and works through the consultation as it unfolds.
They are sometimes called AI virtual patients or digital standardized patients. The idea is the same - to give learners more chances to practise clinical communication without needing a human simulated patient for every attempt.

How they compare with human SPs
Human simulated patients are still the gold standard for most communication skills teaching, especially where emotional realism and live feedback matter. AI standardized patients are not meant to replace that.
What they are good for is the practice that is hard to schedule. For example, repeating the same case multiple times, trying a different line of questioning, or last minute practice before a clinical placement. After each consultation, the learner gets a transcript and checklist-based feedback to enable them to reflect on their consultation and identify areas for improvement.
What an AI standardized patient looks like in SimChat
Learners can interact by text, voice or video. In video mode they speak with an AI avatar that you choose when building the case.

You control the patient background, the script and the assessment rubric (checklist). The learner just starts the consultation and practises.
If you want the character to look and sound a particular way, Avatar studio lets your organisation create custom avatars. You can generate one from a description, upload a photo, or take one with a camera, then pair it with a voice. Those avatars stay private to your organisation.
Build them from the scripts you already have
Most institutions already have SP scripts, OSCE briefs and case banks. With SimChat’s AI scenario generator, you can upload that material and turn it into an interactive case in under 60 seconds. Describe what you need, attach a PDF or Word document, then review and edit before publishing.
That means you are not starting from a blank page every time. The content you already use for SP teaching can also support independent practice between sessions.
Practise in more than one language
SimChat also supports multilingual consultations. Learners can practise in their target language, with a range of accents and voices available. That is useful for IMGs, multilingual programmes, and any setting where patients are not only spoken to in English.
Use them alongside your existing SP programme
AI standardized patients in SimChat can complement an existing human SP program. AI standardized patients are available 24/7, and learners can interact with them using their own devices.
